Etymology

It was earlier Aldewynebrigg ' extra Wynburn '1268Ass , Ald (e )winesbrigg (e ), Aldwynesbrigg ' subter Wymborn ', A (y )lwynesbrigg ', Alwinesbrigg ', Alwynesbrugg ' subter Wymburn '1280ib , QW, pontem Aldewini n.d. (1372) ChrP , Alwynsbrygge c. 1500Fry , Aleyn bridg (e )1535–43 Leland, Aleynsbrydge 1543Ct , Alwins Bridge 1618Map , Aldwyn Bridge 1620 Hutch3, 'Ealdwine's bridge', from the OE  pers.n. Ealdwine and brycg , cf. Nicholas atte Brigge 1327SR , William atte Brygge 1340 NI, v. atte . As pointed out by Ekwall RN 4 and Fägersten 88–9, the bridge gave name to R. Allen, earlier called Wimborne , v. RNs.infra . The Ealdwine in question is perhaps the Aldwin who held TRE an unidentified manor of 1 hide called Winburne in 1086 DB (v. VCHDo 3104, Fägersten 88 fn. 1, cf. Eyton 111).
