Etymology

Westmyngton (lost), Westmyngton 1416Weld 1, 1442Weld 1, 1445Weld 1, 1626Bartelot , Westmauston (probably for Westmanston ) 1316 FA, Westmynton 1344 Cl, Ipm, 1352 FF, 1421, 1422Weld 1, Westmonton 1457, 1462ib , probably 'farm of the western dwellers', from west, mann (gen.pl. manna ), tūn , cf. Westmanton D 180, Westmancote Wo 103. This seems to have been the name of a farm or tithing in this par., but it is associated with Shitterton and Southbrook in 1316 FA, and with Shitterton and White Lovington in 1626Bartelot (all in Bere Regis par. supra ), so it is probably to be located to the N or E of Turners Puddle, 'west' in the name being in relation to Bere Regis.
