Etymology

Snelling Copse, Snelling Dairy, Snelling Fm (SY 812894), Snellyng 1415Weld 1 (p), 1418Weld 1 (p), prat ' apud Snellyng 1420ib , piscar ' domini apud Snellyng 1445ib , pontis apud Snellyng 1475ib , Snelling (e )1533, 1565 AD V, 1564Feth , East Snelling 1625ib , East Snelling , West Snelling 1774 Hutch1, Snelling Coppice , Snelling Heath , Snelling Plant 1838TA , situated on R. Frome (a ford is marked 6″). This is possibly a manorial name from the ME  surname Snelling (< OE  Snelling , an -ing 3 derivative of the OE  pers.n. Snell ) as supposed by Zachrisson DTR 158, cf. also claus ' cum prat ' in Snellyng nuper Clementis Snellyng 1443Weld 1. But the name is more likely to be a p.n. proper meaning 'Snell's place', from the OE  pers.n. Snell and -ing 2 , an early p.n. type, cf. the occurrence in the neighbouring par. of Affpuddle of a Walter Snel 1327SR ; the p.n. would then have given rise to a surname (de ) Snellyng .
