Etymology

'Valley where thorn-trees grow', v. þorn (gen.pl. þorna ), cumb , cf. Thorncombe 273 which has the same origin. Thorncombe Thorn at a cross-roads just SW of the village apparently commemorates a notable thorn-tree.
