Etymology

'The church on R. Stour', v. mynster , RNs. infra , cf. Lytchett Minster par. supra , Sturminster Newton par. infra .The manorial affix is from the Marshals , earls of Pembroke, of whom William Marescallus or Mareschal was here in 1204 Hutch3, 1212 Fees, 1218 Pat, etc, cf. Charlton Marshall par. supra . It was also called East Sturminster 1774 Hutch1, from its situation relative to Sturminster Newton. On the AN  spellings Estur - with prosthetic e before st , -milistria with interchange of n and l , and T (h )ur - with loss of s , v. ANInfl 55, 141, 67. For Moorecourt , v. Moorcourt Fm infra . There is mention of Sturministre Marescall hundred in 1307 Ipm.
