Etymology

For etymology and for other early forms, v. Gussage All Snts par. 2 276, cf. also M. Gelling, Place -Names in the Landscape (1984) 29, for the suggestion that the name may rather be from a word related to the postulated gyse with the noun-forming suffix -ic . St Andrew is from the dedication of the church, earlier a chapel. The late affix Higher or Upper is from its position relative to Gussage St Michael par. (Middle ) and Gussage All Snts par. (Lower ), cf. also foll. The forms Gessich Gentil 1236 FF, etc, placed under Gussage All Snts 2276 (following Fägersten 92), are identified with this Gussage by Drew, who also cites Guschich Gentill 1283, John Gentyl of Gyssich St Andrew 1291 Banco.
