Etymology

Named from R. Piddle or Trent, cf. Affpuddle par. supra , v. lȳtel ; for the DB spellings with r for l , v. ANInfl 142. John Deverel held 1/16 part of a fee here in 1303 FA, cf. also Elias Deverell 1456 Pat, Hutch3 2619; for other lands held by this family, cf. the f.n. Deverils infra and Deverel Fm in Milborne St A. par. supra ; Combe is cumb 'valley', probably with reference to the valley through which R. Piddle or Trent flows near Little Puddle Fm. There are medieval settlement remains on either side of this valley, v. RCHM 3210.There is mention of a 'free chapel' here in 1323 Hutch3.
