Etymology

Hile Coppice, Hile Fm (ST 792118), Hele 1244Ass (p), de la Hyla 13 GlastR (p), La Hele , atte Hile (p)e14GlastE , close called Hile or Hiles 1640DCMDeed , cf. Westhyla 13 GlastR, Westhile e14GlastE , Helomede (possibly for Helemede ) 1307 (15) ForReg , from the WSax  dat.sg. form hēale of h(e)alh 'a nook, a corner of land', with west , mǣd . This name is probably to be identified with bi merehale 968 (14) Glast (S 764), by Merehale 1338–40 Glast, 'by the boundary nook', in the Anglo-Saxon bounds of Sturminster Newton, v. (ge)mǣre; there is a pronounced step in the par. bdy here near Hile Fm.
