Etymology

Whitefield Fm & Whitefield Wd (SY 902946), claus ' voc ' Whytewell 1422Midd , cottage called Whitewell 1671Drax , Whitewell Close , Whitewell Cross , Whitewell Wood 1846TA , Whitefield 1811 OS, Whitefield Mill 1826 Gre, 'white spring or stream', v. hwīt , well(a), with reference to the springs or the stream marked 6″, cf. Whitfield in Bradford P. 1 335 which has a similar late development -well > -field . The form Wytefeld 1244Ass , tentatively identified with this place by Fägersten 76 (it occurs in fact only as a surname under Cogdean hundred), clearly does not belong here. The former mill here (also marked 1811 OS) was called Rudgewaye Mylle 1550 Middy v. the f.n. Ridgeway infra .
