Etymology

Blakelond (lost), le Blakelonde 1380HarlCh , Blakelondes 1412 FA, Blakelond (e )1421 FF, 1431 FA, 1433, 1439HarlCh , 1442 Hutch3, Blaklond 1439 FF, 'dark-coloured tract of land', v. blæc , land . Fägersten 34 places this in Holwell par. infra , but as Taylor, DoNHAS 88 209, points out, it is more likely to have been in the old par. of Stock Gaylard, now part of Lydlinch. Taylor suggests a location about ST 729114, mainly on the assumption of a connection with Blackfield Mead 1844TA alt.app. (Lydlinch), a field on the old bdy between Stock Gaylard and Lydlinch. However the f.n. Inner Blacklands , Outer Blacklands 1840TA (Lydlinch), near New House Fm at ST 745127 and within a mile of both parts of the former par. of Stock Gaylard, should perhaps also be reckoned with: in the 14th and 15th centuries there may well have been a further small detached area of Stock Gaylard par. within Lydlinch. Another f.n. Blacklands in the Lydlinch TA at ST 764115 is less likely to be relevant.
