Etymology

'Royal manor', v. cyne- (later replaced by cyning 'king'), tūn , a common p.n.; the smaller of the two DB manors was held TRE and TRW by a king's thegn (VCHDo 3110). The manor was granted to Alan Plugenet in 1266 FF, cf. Alan Plukenet 1280, Alan de Plokenet 1288Ass , Sibyl Plukenet 1325 Cl, v. Hutch3 469. The suffix Magna (Lat  magna 'great'), alternating with grant , grand (OFr) and micel , mycel (OE), distinguishes it from Little Kington in W Stour par. infra .
