Etymology

Named from R. Iwerne, which also gives name to Iwerne Minster par. infra and Steepleton Iwerne par. 2 114, v. RNs.infra ; for the DB identification, v. VCHDo 397, DBGazetteer 121. The manorial affix is from the Courtenays, Earls of Devon, cf. Hawise de Curtenei 1212 Fees, Robert de Curtenay 1242 Cl, John de Curtenay 1261 Ch, 1280Ass , etc, v. Hutch3 485, 88. The isolated form Iwerton ' contains tūn 'farm, estate'. The alternative name Shroton means 'sheriff's farm or estate', from scīr-(ge)rēfa and tūn , and is thus identical in origin with Shrewton W 236 and Shurton So (DEPN); the manor of Werne belonged in 1086 DB to Baldwin the sheriff (vicecomes ), this being Baldwin of Exeter, sheriff of Devon (VCHDo 348, 97). The bounds of an Anglo-Saxon estate of 2 hides in the W of the present par. are given in 958 (15) ShaftR (S 656).
