Etymology

Farrington (Fm) (ST 841154) [ˈfæriŋdən], Ferendone 1285 FA (p), Farendon (e )1315 Cl (p), 1322 Fine (p), 1324 Inq aqd, 1327 Clet freq to 1336 FF (p), Feredona n.d. (1372) ChrP , Farindon 1377 IpmR, Faryngdon 1412 FA, Farrington 1664 HTax, Far (r )ingdon 1774 Hutch1, 1811 OS, 1870 Hutch3, 'fern-covered hill', from fearn and dūn , cf. Faringdon Brk 365; the modern spelling in -ton is apparently recent, the only early instance being the single 17th cent. form. The place gave name to the GeldR hundred of Ferendone , an earlier name for (part of) Redlane hundred, v. supra .
