Etymology

'(Estate of) five hides', from fīf and hīd , a common p.n., cf. foll. and Fifehead Magdalen par. infra . This manor was assessed at five hides in DB (VCHDo 396), and was held by William de Nevill ' in 1235–6 Fees (the surname is from Néville or Neuville in France, v. Tengvik 102, IPN 127).
