Etymology

Luckford Coppice (SY 877858), Luggeford 1381 Misc, Lug (g )eford 1381 (16) Pitt , Ludgeford c. 1586 Tres, Luckford 1774 Hutch1, Luckford Fd , Luckford Wd 1843TA , 1861 Hutch3, possibly 'Lugga's ford', from an OE  pers.n. Lugga (suggested for Lugworthy D 180, cf. the Do surnames Robert Lug (')1327SR , 1332 SR (Haselbury B.), William Lugg '1332 SR (Gillingham)), and ford . However the first el. could alternatively be a Brit r.n. identical with R. Lugg (Radnor, Sa, He) and Luke Brook (He) which are derived from Brit  *Leuc (o ā ) (Jackson 309, 556–7, cf. Ekwall RN 268–9); Luckford would then mean 'ford over R. Lugg ', Lugg being an earlier name for the stream now called Luckford Lake (v. RNs.) which flows N into R. Frome and forms the W bdy of the Isle of Purbeck supra ; the ford itself (Luggeford ) is a point on this same Purbeck bdy, and is no doubt to be identified with the ford marked 6″ where Luckford Lake is crossed by the East Stoke-West Holme road just W of Luckford Coppice.
