Etymology

Pop Mallers Coppice (ST 689059), Poplyngalres e14GlastE , Poplyngallers 1548Ct , (common called ) Popling e16 Hutch3, Popmalters Coppice (sic)1838TA , second el. alor 'alder'. The origin of Poplyng is uncertain, but it may be an -ing 1 or -ing 2 derivative of popel 'a pebble', cf. however the ME  vb. pople 'to flow in a tumbling manner, etc.' (v. NED s.v. popple ); there is a small stream just N of the coppice.
