Historical Forms

  • Walton c.1160 StB
  • Walton in Kirkbybeghok 1378 ib
  • Low Walton 1723 CW(OS)v

The absence of any forms showing an e between the l and the t makes it unlikely that this is OE w (e )ala tūn , 'tūn of the Britons.' It probably means 'walled settlement.' The origin of the name is unknown.
