Etymology

The 1322 form, as printed, appears as Droppingerag , and the manuscript is not clear, but Droppingcrag appears to be the correct reading. The word dropping' may be used here in the sense of 'dripping.' Three other examples of the name are found in south-west Cumberland, but no early forms have been found for them.
