Etymology

Carling Stone (6″). This name may contain ON  kerling , 'old woman.' There is a clear south Cumberland example of this word in the lost Kerlingsik c. 1250 StB, 'old woman's stream,' v. sík (under sīc ), in Bolton in Gosforth supra 397. Carling Knott supra 412 may have the same origin.
