Etymology

'Peasant's clearing', v. (ge)būr, lēah . The later names are taken from an old mill-dam here (v. myln , damme ) and a chapel-of-ease to Wrenbury, v. chapel(e), cf. 92supra . The place gave name to Barnett Brook 114. No explanation has been found for Sandfitch Green , popularly corrupted to Sandwich Green (v. grēne 2 ). It may be a form of a p.n. Sandbache 'sandy valley-stream', from sand and bece 1 , bæce 1 , cf. Sandbach 2269.
