Etymology

'Dodda's cottage' from the OE  pers.n. Dod (d )a , *Dodd , and cot, with wudu , grēne 2 , (ge)hæg and hall . 'Dodcott in the Field' 1266 distinguishes the hamlet from the wood, v. feld . A certain Dot was tenant of Wilkesley infra in 1086 DB (v. Feilitzen 226). Dot and Dodda may have been alternative names for the same man. However, Dr von Feilitzen observes that Dot and Dodda are not formal alter- natives of the same name, and that the spelling Dottecote is due to unvoicing of d before k , and does not contain the pers.n. Dot .
