Etymology

Blobb Hill (109–418595), Blobb Hill 1842 OS, the site of the remains of a castle, castrum de Aldeford 1276 Cl, 1290, 1311 Ipm, castrum de Alderford 1290 ib, castrum de Aldreford 1290 Cl. Blobb Hill is the mound of the motte. The bailey was known as the Hall Croft 1819 Orm2, cf. Hall Yard 1837TA , from a lost mansion built here (Orm2 ii757–8), v. castel(l), hall , croft , geard , hyll . Blobb - is ModEdial. blob (EDD, NED) 'a bubble, a rounded lump or blister', from the rounded shape of the castle mound. Cf. Aldford supra .
