Etymology

v. hamm . This hamm was distinguished from Woodham supra by the epithet feld , the contrast being between the woodland and the open country. v. feld and cf. Field and Wood Plumpton (La).

The name is carried back to the 12th cent. by the form Hama Willelmi 1167 P, but it is uncertain whether this form relates to Woodham or to Ham Green.
