The final el. is dūn 'hill', sometimes weakened to -den . The spellings show a great deal of variety, but the first el. may be efen 'flat, level'.The farm is on the edge of a narrow ridge formed by the 200′ contour.A prosthetic Y - is fairly common in names beginning with E -.Professor Löfvenberg considers that in view of the persistent Y - in the early forms the first el. is more likely to be a pers.n. Geofa , as in Evington Gl 2 83, Yeaveley Db 619, Yeoveney Mx 19, Jevington Sx 412.
