Etymology

Portions of Sonning and Charlton Hundreds, which were appurtenant to the manor of Amesbury in Wiltshire, were organised under the name of Ashridge Hundred, the court being held at Ashridge, alternatively known as Hertoke . The history of this hundred (which appears to be first mentioned 1397 Cl) is discussed in VCH iii, 228–9.The only reference to Hertoke which has been found is that quoted in VCH iii, 228, which states that the manor court was held there in the late 15th cent.
