Historical Forms

  • Hyremere 1315,1317 Pat 1318 Cl 1359 RentSur
  • Hiremere 1318 Pat 1321 Cl 1359

Etymology

Hiremere (lost), Hyremere 1315, 1317 Pat, 1318 Cl, 1359RentSur , Hiremere 1318 Pat, 1321 Cl, 1359 Pat, Fine, InqMisc. The second el. is mere 'pool'; the first looks like OE  hȳr 'hire, wages', which might be used in a p.n. in the sense 'payment contracted to be made for the temporary use of something' (BTSuppl). This may be the first el. of Harbottle Nb. Hiremere is associated with Foliejon (supra ) in most of these references. It is stated in VCH (III 87) to be mentioned in the bounds of Winkfield in the 10th cent., but the pool which occurs there is called hrytmes mere , and it is very doubtful whether the two can be identified.
