Etymology

Buntingbury (?lost), Bontyngbury alias Bentyngbury 1359 Pat, Buntyngbury 1491PubLib (Bray ), Hy 8RentSur , Buntingbury Brocas 1548LRMB , Buntingbury Jas ISpecCom , c. 1840TA . Probably 'Bunta's fortified manor-house', v. -ing-, burh . This OE pers.n. is suggested as the first el. of Benton (D 30) and Buntingford (Hrt 182), and evidence for a strong name Bunt is discussed Sx 271. Alternatively, the first el. might be the bird-name bunting , which DEPN suggests as the first el. of Buntingford. This would give a compound like those discussed in Elements 1, 61. For Brocas cf. VCH III, 74, 'The estate known as Buntingbury…also formed part of the estate of Sir John Brocas and is still annexed to the manors of Clewer Brocas and Dedworth'.
