Etymology

The second el. is feld 'open land', the first probably wer , wær , 'weir, river-dam, fishing enclosure in a river'. Cf. Wargrave 119.Warfield lies beside a stream. DEPN suggests that the first el. of Warfield is a contraction of wernan wille in the charter bounds of Winkfield, but although the two parishes adjoin, wernan wille is not near Warfield, and a connection between the names does not seem probable, v. Pt 3.
