Etymology

Wane Bridge is probably Wambridge 1841TA . The bridge is on the stream which flows through the parishes of Binfield and Waltham St Lawrence to join the Loddon south of Twyford. There was a Wom Bridge lower down it, for which v. 115, and a less-well-recorded Westwanbrigg 75. Land near this stream is referred to as wassan hamme in the bounds of BCS 762, KCD 1303 (discussed in Pt 3).It is possible that this OE name, which means 'meadow of the marsh' (v. wæsse , hamm ), was transferred from a tract of meadow to the stream, and lies behind the 19th-century forms Wam and Wom .Later names for this stream are discussed 128.
