Etymology

Piling Hill, Piling Ground and Piling Mead 1840TA , cf. Pyle 1476 AD.v. pīl 'shaft'; this hill is climbed by the road from Fyfield which crosses the stream E. of Tubney, a similar position to that of Pile Hill in Greenham (Pt 1248). Both names may refer to stakes marking the way through marshy ground.
