Etymology

Aldfield Fm, Aldefeld '1200 Cur, 1241–2FF , 1242 (13th) ReadingC , Aldefeld on la Doune 1300 Ipm, Allfeild Gappe 1607LRMB , Awfield 1613 Loder, Awefeild Hedge , Awefeild Waye and Awefeild Gapp 1628SpecCom , Avill 1634 Loder. Aldfield Common and Aldfield Fm are Halvehill Common and Halvehill Farm 1830 OS. v. (e)ald, feld . There are several examples of this n. in Berks, v. Pt 156 and 351, 354. There are further examples in f.ns., and it is well-evidenced in other counties. In YW 5 193 the translation 'old stretch of open country' is given. In Berks a meaning 'arable land' seems more suitable for feld , and Oldfield may be the earliest cultivated ground in the area.
