Goldenmile Rd

Other OS name in the Parish of East Hendred

Historical Forms

  • Golden Mile 1840 TA
  • Gilden Mill 1628 SpecCom

Etymology

, Golden Mile 1840TA , possiblyconnected with Gilden Mill 1628SpecCom . The road is on the Downs , and if the second el . is myln it can only refer to a windmill , but cf. Gill Mill O 318 , v. gylden . The second el . may be mile ( in which case the 1628 form is a poor spelling ) , and the name could refer to the profits of the cloth fairs held at E . Hendred in the Middle Ages , which are believed to have been sited along this road ( VCH iv, 294 ) .
