Etymology

Poughley, Lower Poughley, Poughele 1288–9 AD, Poghele 1361 Fine, 1366 Pat, Pogley Ryvers , Poklerevers 16th VCH iv249, Paughley Green , Lower Paugley 1761 Rocque. This appears to be the same name as Poughley in Chaddleworth (290–1) about 4 miles away, and it seems possible that the wood of that name stretched from one place to the other, and lay on both sides of the R. Lambourn.Ryvers from the family of Richard de Ryvers , who obtained the manor of East Garston in 1323 (Pat).
