Etymology

Cock Marsh, Cokmerhs 1317ECR , Cokmersh 1344ib , Cokmarshe , Cokmershgate 1608LRMB , Cockmershe Tarrs 1636SpecCom . First el. cocc 2 'wild bird' or cocc 1 'hillock, heap'. The second el. could refer to the tumuli on the low ground by the R. Thames. Cockden Grove , for which early forms are given infra 85, may be a related name, and here again it is impossible to say whether cocc 1 or cocc 2 is more likely. Previous authors (DEPN, Elements 1, 104) have connected Cocdun with Cookham, but, as explained supra , Cookham has a first el. cōc , and the two names discussed here seem more likely to derive from cocc .
