Etymology

'Stony clearing', v. stān , lēah , cf. Stainley pt. v infra . The 1316 spelling Taneley is due to AN loss of initial s - (cf. IPN 103). The later spellings in Stand - are paralleled by several YW p.ns. in Hand - (from Han -), cf. Phonol. § 46.
