Etymology

Burmantofts (lost), (leʒ ) Burghmantoftes 1309 WCR, 1409WCR 1, 1546 YChant, Borwemantoftes 1316 WCR, Burmantoftes 1546 YChant, 1560, 1583 YD i, (a close called, two closes of meadow called) Burnitofts 1731 LdsM. Of the same origin as Burmantofts (Leeds) pt. iv infra . From OE , ME  burh-man 'a townsman, a burgess' and later in Y 'a burgage tenant' (v. NED s.v. borough-man ) and ON  topt, ME  toft 'an enclosure, a curtilage'. The word burhman is also found as a surname as in Willelmus Burghman (13 Selby i, 191).
