Etymology

Goody Bower (lost), le Godeybowr 1409WCR 1, Godeborestyle , Godeborestile 1461, 1462, 1492MinAcct . The first el. is probably the surname Goody (probably from the OE  fem. pers.n. Godgifu or the like), as in Goody Cross (Preston) pt. iv; v. būr 'a cottage, dwelling', stigel 'stile'. This is the Gudeboure at the quarell hede referred to in e.15 Towneley ii, 367, and the land in Goodybower called Quarrell Pits 1558 Tayl (app. x); it seems to have been near St Johns in the north of the town, as it is clearly to be associated with Goody Green in Outwood 159supra , just north of this.
