Other OS name in the Parish of Kirkby Stephen

Etymology

, 1844TA , possibly from We dial . gowder vb . ' copulare ' ( of animals ) , related to NCy dial . gowdy ' lascivious, wanton ' ( EDD s.v . ) , but in this name , in Gouther Crag(ii, 174infra ) and in a lost Gawtherbarrow ( 1629 Kend i, 306 in a Longsleddale document ) , we may have ON  gauð ' barking ' , used in the sense ' echoing ' , as suggested for the three Gowder Crags in Cu 441 .
