, Broad Lead (Wd )1844ib , probably ' wide watercourse ' , v. brād , lǣd , explained by the statement in Hutch 3 1 520 that ' Encombe [ 300 yds W ] was much improved by the late Earl of Eldon , who , at great cost , tunnelled the eastern hill and brought from a spring in the adjacent valley a more copious supply for the piece of water in front of the mansion ' , cf. Fish Pond infra ; the second el . has been confused with lēah .
