Historical Forms

  • Clatterdishes 1842 OS

Etymology

, Clatterdishes 1842 OS . This may be a humorous modern name from some domestic noise . But if it is an old formation , the final el . would be edisc ' an enclosure, an enclosed park ' , and the first el . may be clater ' loose stones ' as in Clatterwick 2115 , or clāte ' burdock, goose-grass ' . The latter , with shortening of the vowel in composition would give *clat-edish [ ˈklat ediʃ ] which popular etymology would render clatter-dish .
