Etymology

( 110–641535 ) , Welschemanesgrene 1531Chol , Welshman 's Green 1831 Bry, Welchmans Green 1839TAMap , ' the Welshman's green ' , v. Wels(c)h-man , grene 2 . Cf. Welchmonis yarden 1637Chol ( half an acre enclosed from the commons , v. gardin ) , and Welsh Row 34supra . These place - names reflect the Welsh connexion of the Nantwich salt trade . The green appears to have been a common , perhaps a camping - place for Welsh salters and packmen , cf. foll. and 1 48 ( route XXV ) .
