Etymology

The first el. is probably ON  heggr , a tree-name which (like Swed hägg , Dan  hæg ) denoted 'bird-cherry, hagberry'; this el. is suggested for Norw  p.ns. like Hegdal (NG xv, 178), Heggenes (ib xii, 173), etc. (NGIndl 53), Manx Agneash (Marstrander 188), and Egholme (i, 50supra ), v. dæl (dalr) 'valley'.
