Etymology

Skellaw Hill, Skelloyate 1540MinAcct , 1553RecAcct . This is the name of a tumulus at grid 83–556154 (RCHM 206). Topography would rule out ON  skjallr 'resounding' (used of streams) or skial 'boundary', but ON  skjálf 'shelf, seat' or some byname like ON  Skǽla are possible, v. haugr 'hill'.
