Etymology

Gaisgill, Gagesgill , Gagesgylle , Gasegille 1310 Whitby, Gassegill (e )1310 ib, HMC x, 322, Gaisgill 1572 NB 489, 1777 M, Gazegill 1823 M. Gages - in the first form is probably an error. 'Ravine of the wild geese', v. gás , gil , cf. Gazegill (YW vi, 176).
