Etymology

Langdale, Langedal (a ), Langedale 1178 Pipe, 1199 NB 491, 1224FF , 1251 Ch, 1256Ass 11det passim to 1337 Ipm (p), Langedena 1179 Pipe, Langdale 1310 Whitby, 1579FF et freq to 1777 M, Langdayle 1564FF . 'The long valley', v. lang , dalr . The single Langedena spelling is due to confusion with the older form Langdales (i, 203supra ), but possibly OE  denu 'valley' was the original form in this name also.
