Etymology

'The brothers' valley', v. bróðir (gen.pl. br ðra ), dalr , cf. EPN i, 53 (s.v. bróðir ). The forms with Brither - represent a raising of ME  -ē - (which is the normal form of ON  - - in ME). For loss of -ð - in Brere - cf. Phonol. §24.
