Etymology

As Ekwall (ScandsCelts 77) suggests, an ON  byname Hnígandr (from ON  hníga 'to bow down, decline, fail') and Irish-Norse erg 'shieling, farmstead'; a MSwed  Hnigingus (to which Mr R. Otterbjörk calls attention) may be a related recorded form of the pers.n.
