Etymology

The locality of this place is not known, but in 1317 Kend ii, 145 it is described as in the vill of Heversham, and the spellings, some of which are ambiguous (as between Asten - and Aften -), may in fact be confused with those of the neighbouring Ackenthwaite in Milnthorpe (1, 95infra ) and Asthwaite (i, 172infra ). The first el. is uncertain, but it could be the ME  pers.n. Astin , v. þveit 'clearing'.
