Etymology

'Martin's valley', v. dæl (dalr). Named from the chapel of St Martin (1266 NWm 258); the valley is that of Howe Grain. It is, of course, possible that the pers.n. is not the saint's name, and that the church dedication was suggested by the name of the valley; the same is true of Patterdale (ii, 221infra ).
