Etymology

Knottkanan (lost), Knotkanan (e ), Knotcanane 1220–47, 1278Lowth , 1278Ass 9d, 1279 ib 4d, Knotcanen , Knochanan 1279 Lanc 449, 452.An inversion compound of ON  knǫttr 'rocky hill-top' and a pers.n. from OIr  Canainn (CGH 533), Canánn or (as Ekwall, ScandsCelts 41, also suggests) Conán with -o - becoming ON, ME -a - as in ON  Kalman from OIr  Colman . F. W. Ragg (CW x, 456) identifies the place with Steel Knotts, but its location is by no means certain.
